Three suspects have been killed in a shootout with the police near eNgcobo in the Eastern Cape.
Police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni said two more suspects were wounded in the bloody attack on Monday and one was arrested after members of the Tactical Response Team received information and intercepted a suspicious vehicle on a gravel road.
She said as the police tried to stop the vehicle, some occupants opened fire, and police retaliated.
Captain Mdleleni said the wounded suspects were being treated in hospital under police guard.
Police also seized two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The three men, aged between 35 and 52, will be charged for crimes ranging from murder to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and are due to appear in court soon.
No police officers were injured during the shooting.
