Three new cases of typhoid fever were reported in the Western Cape on Thursday, just a few days after Gauteng reported two fresh cases of the infectious bacterial fever.
Western Cape Health Spokesperson Emmerentia Cupido said two young girls aged nine and 10 have been diagnosed with typhoid.
A 52-year-old man is also being monitored after tests indicated he had typhoid.
“The two girls are from the Cape Town metropolitan area while the male is from the Cape Winelands,” said Cupido, adding that the source of the typhoid was still under investigation and those affected were on treatment.
“At this point we do not have the travel records of the patients so we are trying to see how they infected with the disease,” said Cupido.
On Monday, the Gauteng Health Department announced that two more cases had been discovered in Tshwane at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.
In Johannesburg, the department confirmed four cases at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and Edenvale District Hospital. One person, who had contracted typhoid, died at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on January 17.
