Three people were killed and at least 10 others were injured on Thursday evening in an accident involving nine cars on the N1 North in Limpopo.
One of the vehicles was torn into three piece, its parts scattered across the road and passengers ejected. Lanes were closed as police and rescue teams used heavy machinery to rescue the injured and searched the area with spotlights for others.
The road is used by hundreds of motorists, many of them heading to Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.
Oscar Nakedi, who was involved in the crash but escaped unhurt, said he said felt lucky to have survived. He said he was shocked to see that some of the cars involved had been damaged beyond repair.
A truck driver who said the accident had happened in front of his eyes said he suspected speeding was the cause of the crash.
Police, who declined to comment on the cause of the crash, appealed for people to donate blood. – African News Agency (ANA)
