Three people burnt to death when a light motor vehicle and a heavy goods truck collided head-on on the N1 Western Bypass outside Bloemfontein in the Free State in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Netcare 911's Jeffrey Wicks says the cause of the accident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a police investigation.
He says the driver of the car managed to escape from the flames and is in a serious condition.
Wicks says three people were trapped inside the car, and all burnt beyond recognition.
The seriously injured driver, as well as the truck driver, was stabilised at the scene and transported by ambulance to the Pelonomi State Hospital.
