According to media reports on Thursday, about 2000 Western Cape pupils fall pregnant every year.
The Cape Times reports that of these, only around a third go back to school and complete their education after giving birth.
Provincial education department spokesperson, Paddy Attwell says 2097 pupils fell pregnant in 2011, compared with 2108 in 2010.
The department had reportedly developed a policy to provide step-by-step guidelines on how principals and governing bodies should support these pupils, to ensure they stayed in school.
