Third Phala Phala farm saga suspect appears in court

A third suspect arrested in connection with the theft of thousands in foreign currency at President Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala game farm appeared in court on Friday after handing himself over to police on Thursday.

The 27-year-old, Ndilinasho Joseph, appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate's Court alongside his two co-accused, Imanuela David and Frolina Joseph.

The trio is accused of stealing around $580 000 from the Presidents farm in 2020.

The money was allegedly stashed under matrasses and some stuffed in couches.

The Hawks arrested David and Joseph in Bela-Bela and Rustenburg on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

They appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of robbery and theft.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the trio face numerous charges including house breaking, theft and an additional charge of money laundering for Imanuela David.

He said their case was postponed to the 17 November 2023 for judgement on David and Frolina Joseph's bail applications.

Ndilinasho will also return on the same date with his legal representation.

The accused are originally from Namibia but they now hold South African citizenship.

"The suspects face charges pertaining conspiracy to commit housebreaking with intent to steal and theft and housebreaking with intent steal and money laundering," NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said at the time.

"This is in connection with the stolen money amounting to $580 000 which belongs to the president Ramaphosa."
