The Good party approaches electoral court to postpone by-elections

The Good party in the Western Cape has called for an investigation into alleged voter registration fraud and for the highly anticipated by-elections in George scheduled for Wednesday to be postponed.

The party claims that the DA canvassers had falsely registered voters from Thembalethu as residents of Ward 20, in Borcherds, where one of the by-elections are due to be held.

Several parties will be competing for three wards, which became vacant following the resignation of Good party councillors in April.

The eight respondents, which include the Independent Electoral Commission as well as provincial Local Government MEC Anton Breddel, had until 2pm on Tuesday to file their answering affidavits.

The Good Party's Brett Herron said: “The Good party has approached the electoral court on an urgent basis seeking an order to force the IEC to postpone the by-elections taking place in George and to conduct an audit and an investigation into the voters’ rolls.

"The matter is currently awaiting the court to hear the application."
