The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union, Sadtu, is mourning the loss of ten educators who died in a horror accident in Limpopo on Tuesday which claimed a total of 13 lives.
Sadtu said in a statement on Wednesday that the deceased were all union members travelling to different schools.
The union said eight of the ten were women.
They were killed when a truck collided head-on with a mini-bus taxi, killing both drivers as well.
“Their death which has come at the critical time of mid-year examinations has left the union reeling in deep pain and shock.
“This tragic loss will, in do doubt, leave a huge gap in their families and the teaching profession,” said General Secretary, Dr Mugwena Maluleke.
He said their collective experience and wisdom can never be replaced.
Maluleke said according to reports, misty weather conditions may have been a contributing factor to the horror crash which left no survivors.
