Ten die in weekend fires in Cape Town

Ten 10 people have lost their lives in fires across Cape Town this weekend, while thousands others must now re-build their homes.

On Friday night, a blaze at an informal settlement in Wesbank gutted three shacks, leaving four people dead including two children.

Saturday morning saw a single shack go up in flames in the Kosovo informal settlement near Philippi, killing a man, a woman and a little boy.

And the massive blaze in Mandela Park in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay has claimed the lives of at least three people as well.

City Disaster Risk Management’s Charlotte Powell says in Imizamo Yethu, thousands of people have been left destitute.

“At this stage we can report that 3500 structures have been destroyed and 15 000 people affected.  Emergency shelters have been activated and various community halls in the area have been made available,” she said.

Powell said NGO partners are providing humanitarian assistance.
