At least ten people have been killed and approximately 40 others injured after a bus rolled down an embankment in the Golden Gate area in the eastern Free State on Friday afternoon.
ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring says paramedics found the bus lying upright some distance off the road. Numerous bodies were strewn across the scene.
"Emergency services immediately set up a triage and staging area to effectively assess the patients," Meiring said. Ten people were declared dead at the scene.
Some of the injured people are in a critical condition.
"Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured patients with advanced life support intervention. Once treated, the patients were transported by various services to nearby hospitals for further treatment. The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
