A 13-year-old boy was shot dead in Church Street in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Saturday evening, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics responded to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting.
“On arrival, paramedics found the young patient lying in the middle of the road. On assessment, paramedics found that the child had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest and leg and showed no signs of life,” he said.
Paramedics immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and provided the patient with advanced life support interventions.
“Unfortunately, after 30 minutes, no signs of life returned and the boy was declared dead. The cause of the incident is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations,” Meiring said.
