A teenager from Tzaneen in Limpopo Province has been charged with perjury after she lied to police about a friend being kidnapped.

Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi says the 14-year-old girl sent police on an expensive wild goose chase when she told them that her friend had been kidnapped by unknown men driving in a panel van on Friday.

She told police that she was walking home from school with her friend, who is also a learner at Meridian College in Tzaneen, when unknown men driving a white panel van, grabbed her friend and forced her inside the vehicle.

Lieutenant Colonel Seabi says police prioritised the case and treated it with urgency only to find out that the entire story was fabricated.

She says, not only was there no kidnapping, but police established that she was not even with a friend.

The 14-year-old is being charged with perjury.
