Teaching Jobs for Cash scandal: Legal action to follow

The Basic Education Department says it will take legal action against those implicated in the so-called ‘jobs for cash’ scandal. The department released its 285 page report into the scandal on Friday night.

The ministerial task team, established by Minister Angie Motshekga, found 38 cases requiring further investigation or pointed directly to wrongdoing when it came to the appointment of teacher and principal posts.

Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says Education officials worked together with the Department of Justice. "Some of the members of certain unions were, indeed involved in influencing the appointment of teachers, and other people were also involved in [alleged] illegal activities", Mhlanga said. "There are people who did illegal things, which has warranted the minister to extend the investigation as far as the forensic team is concerned," he added.
