A former teacher from St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls in Pretoria will have to present himself to a police station three times a week after being granted bail on rape charges.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Lumka Mahanjana says the 34-year-old, who is now unemployed, is facing charges of rape, sexual assault and sexual grooming.
She says it is alleged that the teacher who was employed between 2017 and 2018, raped, sexually groomed and assaulted a Grade 5 learner during swimming lessons at the school.
The NPA says the learner only realised the teacher's actions were innapropriate when she attended sexual offence classes in 2019.
Mahanjana says the girl then started to self harm until the mother became concerned about the change in her behaviour.
She says the victim disclosed what had happened and a case was opened with the police in Cape Town where the docket was transferred to the Brooklyn Police station.
The former teacher, who may not be named, handed himself and his passport over to police and said he should get bail as he had not previous convictions.
The State, however, considered him a flight risk as he had no job or assests in the country.
He was granted bail of R10 000 and must be back in court on the 27th of March.
