An investigation is underway into a violent brawl between a teacher and a pupil at the Glenvista High School in Johannesburg.
A video of the incident, which reportedly occurred on Thursday went viral on social media.
In the video, the teacher and a student can be seen exchanging blows.
The teacher then hurls a chair at the student before he is pelted by a different student with a desk.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has condemned the incident.
Spokesperson, Steve Mabona confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) said the fight showed the extent of the breakdown of discipline in schools.
NAPTOSA's Executive Director Basil Manuel said pupils do not face the same consequences as teachers do.
"Teachers are at wit's end and children, particularly in the high schools are taking chances, knowing that very little can happen.
"Having lost his cool the teacher will be facing disciplinary action."
Manuel emphasized that the incident should be thoroughly investigated.
"Everybody has a right to safety.
"Teachers have a right to a safe working environment and children have a right to a safe schooling environment, he added.
