Taxi body calls for fuel levy intervention

Twitter

The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has written to the Department of Minerals and Energy on the issue of fuel levies.

It wants government to look at ways in which it can ease fuel levies in the wake of a series of sharp price hikes.

The call by the NTA comes after the taxi industry increased their fares by between 25%-30% due to rising fuel costs.

Spokesperson Theo Malele says government should be sensitive and consider their proposal.

“In that letter we are pressing that the government should be sensitive to the taxi industry that creates 400 000 indirect and direct jobs. It also cannot be allowed to go under because it is also the biggest public transport mover."

Malele said their proposal is that fuel levies be relaxed or removed.

A similar call has been made repeatedly in recent months by opposition political parties and the Automobile Association of South Africa.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen oil prices around the world rise to unprecedented levels this year.

South African motorists are currently paying record highs of R26.70 per litre of petrol and R27.33 for a litre of diesel.
