Suspects arrested for allegedly abducting bank manager

Two men are due to appear in court in Polokwane after police rescued a regional bank manager who was abducted over the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the victim was out jogging on Saturday morning when he was allegedly abducted by several men near his home in Welgelegen, on the city’s outskirts.

He said the kidnappers contacted the man’s family and demanded “a substantial amount for his safe return.” Mojapelo said the ransom money was dropped off at the agreed-upon place and the suspects fled in two BMW vehicles with the money.

“A high-speed car chase ensued and the driver of one of the BMWs, carrying the abducted victim, lost control, swerved into the nearby bushes, and came to a halt. Two suspects were ultimately arrested after they apparently got shot. The others managed to flee the scene in the white BMW sedan”

He said the victim was also injured during the shootout incident and was taken to the hospital where he is in a stable condition. “The money was also recovered and the other BMW confiscated,” Mojapelo said.

He said the two suspects, aged 25 and 28, are currently in hospital under heavy police guard and face charges of abduction, extortion, and attempted murder.  They were due in court on Monday.
