Suspected rhino poachers nabbed in NWest

POTCHEFSTROOM, December 18 (ANA) – Two men suspected of conspiring to poach rhino have been arrested near Potchefstroom for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, North West police said on Sunday.

“The duo was arrested after the police got a tip-off that the men were allegedly conspiring to poach rhino in private farms around Potchefstroom,” Lt-Col Pelonomi Makau said.

The two men, aged 40, were arrested on Friday by Potchefstroom K9 unit and Flying Squad members between Stilfontein and Potchefstroom.

“According to information, the suspects’ vehicle was spotted and stopped along the N12 road for a search. During the search, a hunting rifle, a silencer, six rounds of ammunition, an axe, and a knife were found inside the vehicle. The suspects, who are from Tembisa in Gauteng province, were then arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” she said.

They were expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
