An alleged cash-in-transit suspect was shot dead, while two others are still at large.
Eastern Cape transport and community spokesperson Makhaya Komisa says the incident occurred on the R63 road between Qumhra and Qonce on Monday night.
He said police responded to information of a white Isuzu double cab that may have been involved in cash-in-transit heists.
According to the police, the vehicle was located at a Stop and Go in Qumrha, where the road is under construction.
Komisa says the police tactically approached the suspects' vehicle, but the suspects began to reverse while simultaneously firing at the police.
The police returned fire, hitting the suspects' vehicle.
Two suspects exited and fled, each armed with a rifle.
In the vehicle, one suspect was found fatally wounded in the driver's seat, wearing gloves, and there was a rifle next to him. Three (3)AK 47s, one (1) R5 rifle, two (2) buckets full of ammunition,
