Suspect shot dead in Durban hospital drama

Police have shot dead a suspect, who had been holding a hostage at Westville Hospital in Durban since around 8 o'clock on Friday morning.

Police say the man is believed to have hijacked a taxi at Marianhill and demanded that the driver take him to hospital. He then allegedly opened fire in the hospital's reception area - wounding three people - before taking at least one hostage in the hospital's first-floor kitchen.

Police tried to negotiate with the suspect.
