The National Prosecuting Authority said 24-year-old Pethe Simiao appeared in court in Soweto on Friday in connection with the rape and murder of six-year-old Amantle Semane in Orlando West.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said Simiao was arrested on Wednesday in Zola in Soweto and faces charges that include rape, murder, kidnapping, and the contravention of the Immigration Act.
The murder of the little girl had sparked widespread community anger.
Amantle went missing on 21 October, and her mother, with the help of the community began to search for her.
Her half-naked body was found on the floor of a shack.
Simiao was later arrested after a witness reported seeing the child in his company.
The case against him was postponed to 1 November for a formal bail application.
