Suspect in court for pretending to be a UN ambassador

A man who managed to convince police that he was a United Nations (UN) ambassador appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

It is alleged that Nhlanhla Sizani, 24, submitted a fraudulent letter with the UN insignia requesting a SAPS escort to polling stations during the 2021 Local Government Elections.

The accused claimed to be a diplomat and asked to be driven to different polling stations as an observer.

The Hawks investigated the matter and established via the UN that Sizani was not a diplomat and that no request for an escort was requested by them.

The SAPS Diplomatic Police Unit suffered a financial loss as a result of the misrepresentation.

Sizani was issued with a summons in December to appear in court on charges of fraud, forgery and uttering.

The matter was postponed to the 23rd of January for the accused to obtain legal representation.
