Suspect arrested for UCT exam disruption released

It's back to square one for investigators probing an incident where a group of people abruptly entered a University of Cape Town (UCT) exam hall on Monday and disrupted proceedings.

The group was caught on viral video tearing up students' exam papers, violently throwing papers and documents to the floor.

UCT subsequently announced the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect, who had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Prior to the suspect's appearance in court yesterday, Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk told Algoa FM News, that the man would be charged with malicious damage to property and incitement.

Later, however, NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, said there was not enough evidence to charge the man and he was let go.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Sue Harrison condemned Monday's disruption and said that this type of behaviour can not be seen as a legitimate protest.
