Student to appear in court for killing roommate and setting him alight

A 25-year-old UZKN student, arrested on a charge of murder, is set to make his first appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.

Police found the burnt remains of Samkelo Zondi - a fourth-year BCom student - on the varsity's Westville campus this past weekend.

Before the grim discovery, they say the suspect was seen emerging from a bush.

Zondi was reported missing by UKZN's Risk Management Services on Friday.

While the motive for the killing isn't yet known, a video, purportedly showing the suspect confessing to the murder has been widely shared on social media and WhatsApp.

It purportedly shows the suspect confessing to the murder and referring to the victim as "umkhovi" (bad/bewitched/zombie).

Police say they're disturbed by the footage of the accused which appears to have been taken before officers arrived on the scene.

They're urging people not to share the clip - doing so is against the law.

In the video, the accused says he used paraffin to set Zondi alight and committed the crime on his own. he added that Zondi did not deserve to be buried.

The University informed students on their official Twitter page that academic activities will be suspended at noon on Monday to allow students to pay their respects and seek the necessary support.
