Police in Limpopo on Wednesday recovered stolen luxury vehicles destined for neighbouring countries.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the operation took place around the Phafuri, Beitbriedge and Pontdrift areas.
”A white Mercedes Benz, stolen in Durban and belongs to a rental company, was apparently being smuggled into Zimbabwe when it got stuck. A 28-year-old man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen vehicle,” said Mojapelo.
”The operation also yielded good results when a Range Rover valued at R900,000 was intercepted en route to Malawi. The driver was found with an amount of R30,000 in his possession. The vehicle was on the verge of crossing Beit Bridge border post.”
Another group driving a Ford Ranger was intercepted when they were about to cross the Limpopo river. They fled on foot into the bushes when police arrived.
”In the success similar to the one in which the provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba intercepted a stolen vehicle that was being pulled with donkeys in the middle of Limpopo River in December last year, police managed to recover the vehicle that got stuck in the middle of the same river.”
An Audi A6 valued at R400,000, another Mercedes Benz C180, value R380,000 and a Datsun Go, valued at R90,000 were also recovered.
Mojapelo said most of the vehicles belonged to car rental companies.
