Yet another human rights violation case has rocked Stellenbosch University.
Both the university and police have confirmed that a case of rape has been reported on the main campus, in Stellenbosch.
It's alleged that the incident took place on Tuesday evening at a residence in Victoria Street.
According to the University, the 19-year-old woman was accompanied to the hospital, where she was examined and received medication, and primary counselling.
The suspect will be suspended from his residence pending investigations.
The student appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was charged on two counts of rape.
He was granted bail of R1 000 with conditions that he must not be in contact with the complainant.
His case was postponed until 29 June 2022 for further investigation.
This is the second student to be suspended for misconduct this week, following the suspension of Theuns du Toit, who is being investigated by police after he urinated on another student's study material, Babalo Ndwayana.
The university's deputy vice-chancellor Professor Hester Klopper says she is committed to dealing with unfair discrimination and gender-based violence.
“I confirm the University’s strict zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence, we will continue to work harder toward creating an environment free of gender-based violence that advances equal rights for all."
