State witness grilled in Oscar Pistorius trial

The state's first witness in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial faced a grilling on Monday afternoon from the paralympian's lawyer, Barry Roux.

Michelle Burger, a neighbour who lives in an adjacent estate to Pistorius, was closely questioned on her direct testimony related to when she heard the gunshots.

Burger was adamant that she heard four gunshots after being awoken in the early hours of Valentine's Day to the shrill screams coming from Pistorius' house.

Roux questioned her closely about the sequence of events when she heard the shots being fired from Pistorius' house.

Roux repeatedly questioned Burger on her statement, in Afrikaans, that she heard "gille" (screams), However, prosecutor Gerrie Nel interjected.

Roux was pointing out that in her statement on what had happened in the early hours of February 14 last year, he did not see the plural of the Afrikaans word "gil" (scream).

"I have to object. It is impossible to say 'ek hoor die vrou gille' (I hear the woman screams')," said Nel.

Burger lives in the Silverstream Estate, about 170m from Pistorius's home in the neighbouring Silver Woods Country Estate.

Pistorius is accused of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, law graduate and model Steenkamp, of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and recklessly discharging a firearm in public.

His lawyers will argue that he mistook her for an intruder when he shot her through the toilet door of his home.

Earlier, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and several charges related to the discharge of a fire-arm in public places.

The hearing continues.
