The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday welcomed the effective 35-year prison sentence imposed on the so-called Springs Monster, who was found guilty of abusing his five children, the rape of his eldest daughter, drug possession and obstruction of justice.
The court from a Psychologist on Monday that the man was a psychopath with no chance of rehabilitation.
The couple made national headlines when they were arrested in 2014 when their son managed to escape and call for help.
The man faced 22 charges and was found guilty in August of the attempted murder of his son, the rape of his daughter, child abuse and neglect, as well as using and dealing in drugs.
The boy was 11-years old at the time of the crime and his sister sixteen. The couple had three more children who also suffered severe abuse and neglect.
The two oldest children have told the North Gauteng High Court through affidavits, that their mother also needs to take responsibility for their abuse.
She faced 20 charges but was only found guilty on a charge of child neglect.
The court found that she was an abused and battered woman who has since divorced her husband.
She was handed a 5-year suspended sentence.
A spokesperson for the NPA in Gauteng Phindi Louw-Mjonodwane said they were satisfied with the sentence imposed to both the accused.
The man and his ex-wife cannot be named to protect the identities of their children.
The couple's five children were rescued in 2014 when they were aged between three and 16. Police raided the family's double-storey house in Springs after neighbours contacted them.
The NPA thanked the neighbours who alerted police after the couple’s then 11-year-old son ran to them for help after his father severely beat him.
