After four days of intense negotiations between Al-Qaeda kidnappers and South African charity organisation Gift of the Givers, former Bloemfontein teacher Yolande Korkie was released in Yemen on Friday morning.
The kidnappers still have Korkie's husband, Pierre.
The Korkies were kidnapped by gunmen in the southern city of Taiz last May while working for a local charity development group.
Gift of the Givers founder, Imtiaaz Sooliman, says even though the kidnappers wanted $2m for Yolande's release, no ransom had been paid.
He says she is safe and they are now negotiating the release of Pierre.
According to an Associated Press report at the time, Yemeni police said a local lawmaker orchestrated the kidnapping to pressure the government to hand over a disputed piece of land.
