Liberty life says there is no evidence yet of financial losses affecting customers following a cyber-attack.
The life insurer says it is currently working with authorities to get to the bottom of the information breach.
Group CEO David Munro says the company was alerted about the breach last week Thursday and alerted the authorities.
Munro says their IT systems came under attack and the personal information of its clients was compromised.
The hackers informed Liberty of vulnerabilities in its systems and demanded payment from the company
At a media briefing in Braamfontein on Sunday night, Munro described the hacking as a criminal act.
