South Africa on track to meet reduced HIV transmission target

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says South Africa is on track to reach its target of only 2% HIV mother-to-child transmission by 2015.

Motsoaledi briefed the media in Johannesburg on Thursday morning where a new survey revealed that South Africa's parent to child transmission has dropped by 8% and is now standing on 2.7%.

Motsoaledi says the next survey they are planning will give a better idea of what happens to infants post 6 weeks of age.

"I am pleased that we can report to the nations that our programmes are actually working that we are now in a position to save lives and we are also proving that testing and putting mothers and infants on treatment early on work. Saying that we are able to say we have saved over 100,000 infants lives, is something that we must all celebrate" Motsoaledi said
