New Covid-19 cases in South Africa saw a significant drop on Sunday with the positivity rate falling below 5%, the lowest since the start of the third wave.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says South Africa has now officially exited the third wave according to the current definition.
It says there were 967 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday evening with sustained decreases in all provinces in daily case numbers and positivity rates the past seven days.
There were a further 51 Covid-19 related deaths in the latest reporting period, bringing total fatalities to 87 052.
KwaZulu-Natal has shown the most new infections, with 272 reported in the last 24 hours, followed by the Eastern Cape with 169 new cases.
There was an increase of 56 hospital admissions on Sunday with just 7 172 people currently receiving treatment in both public and private facilities.
