What followed was nothing short of carnage as 42 variants wreaked social and economic havoc through two waves, the second one infinitely more devastating than the first.
To date, 50 366 people in South Africa have lost their lives to the virus which has also inflicted billions of rands in loses to the country’s fiscus and cost the country thousands of jobs.
South Africa recently moved back to Level-one amidst repeated warnings that any lowering of the guard will bring on the third wave.
In his reflection of the year gone by in a discussion with the National Press Club on Thursday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize lauded the country for its efforts in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said he felt South Africa had fared well under the circumstances and that with all the partnerships, social solidarity and unity, the country is in a better place today.
