Soldier arrested for allegedly stealing firearms

File

The Department of Defence has welcomed the arrest of a soldier for allegedly stealing firearms and ammunition from the Tempe Military Base.

Department spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, said police acted on information when they raided a house in Brandwag in Bloemfontein.

He said it is alleged that the suspect had been selling the firearms to members of the public.

“Upon his arrest, he was charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hand grenade as well as possession of an SAPS uniform cap.”

“All (the) items are estimated to the value of R90 000,” Dlamini said.

The soldier is due to appear in court soon following his arrest this past week.

The Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya reiterates his warning to all soldiers that no acts of criminality would go unpunished.
