The body of a kidnapped 9-month-old baby was found near an abattoir in Parys, a town in South Africa’s Free State province, police confirmed on Wednesday.
In a statement, police said baby Kutloano Maloitsane’s decomposed body was found in bushes by passersby who alerted officers on Monday night. The cause of death had yet to be determined.
The baby boy was snatched by a man who had tried to rape his mother.
“It’s alleged that the mother of baby Kutlwano was walking to her parent`s house carrying the baby on her back when she was approached by an unknown male who forcefully grabbed her by the hand and attempted to rape her,” the statement said.
“She managed to get away but unfortunately the baby fell down and the unknown male took the baby and ran away. The mother is deaf and mute and she couldn’t scream for help.”
The province’s acting police commissioner, Major General Tollie Afonso, said a manhunt had been launched for the baby killer.
“Whilst we are still working round the clock to find the person who allegedly snatched baby Kutloano from her mother which led to his senseless death, we plead with the community to assist with information,” he said.
