Kwazulu Natal police are investigating after the driver of a bakkie who crashed into pedestrians, killing six people, was stabbed to death by an angry mob.
The incident happened in Khwashange in Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.
ER 24 said their paramedics and other services responded to the scene and found the driver inside the bakkie with fatal stab wounds.
"It is understood from bystanders that members of the community allegedly stabbed the driver to death shortly after the incident," said ER 24's Werner Vermaak.
"Five pedestrians were found with fatal injuries. There was nothing that paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead on the scene. Another pedestrian was in a critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries on scene," he said.
Vermaak said seven others were treated on scene for injuries ranging from moderate to serious and taken to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
He said the exact circumstances surrounding this incident is not yet known.
