Six people were killed and three others injured on Wednesday night after a head-on collision on the N12 highway roughly 15 km outside Potchefstroom, emergency service ER24 said on Thursday.
ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene shortly before midnight and found a bakkie and light motor vehicle in the middle of the road.
Both vehicles had sustained a significant amount of damage, and six people were in the light car while three were found inside the bakkie.
"Paramedics assessed the patients in the light motor vehicle and found that two men, a woman and two children, aged between three and four, had all sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life," Meiring said.
"Nothing could be done for them and they were later declared dead."
Paramedics performed advanced life support to the sixth person in the car, a woman who had sustained critical injuries. She was airlifted by a private medical helicopter to Lenmed Randfontein.
Of the three men found in the bakkie, one was declared dead while two had moderate injuries and were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Meiring said the exact details surrounding the accident were not yet known.
