KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC, Willies Mchunu has expressed sadness over the deaths of at least six children, who were killed when a bakkie overturned in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.
Mchunu said the bakkie was alleged to have been carrying 34 school pupils, and questioned why this was allowed to have happened.
He said this was not only an overloaded bakkie, but a recipe for disaster.
ER24 spokesperson, Pieter Rossouw, said it appeared that the bakkie had veered off the road and crashed into a fence and then a house.
Eighteen other children were injured.
The cause of the accident would be the subject of a police investigation.
