Shaik wants medial parole converted to ordinary parole

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha says that six years after convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik was released on medical parole, apparently terminally ill, he has applied for ordinary parole.

Masutha also rejected claims by the DA that he had personally received Shaik's application.

Shaik, a former financial advisor to president Jacob Zuma, was found guilty of fraud and corruption in 2005 and jailed for 15 years.

He was however released on medical parole after two years.

Mtunzi Mhaga, the spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Corrections, says "there is no legal provision for the conversion of medial parole to ordinary parole."

He said the Department will advise teh parole board about this.
