Seven perish as train hits bakkie in Cape Town


Seven people were killed in Cape Town when a bakkie was hit by a train Buttskop level crossing in Blackheath.

Police spokesperson, Andre Traut, said the men were being transported to work on Friday morning when the accident happened.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident is being investigated.  At approximately 06.45am a bakkie with seven male occupants got struck by the train.  All seven were killed," Traut said.

Metrorail said the train's crew was in shock adding that it had immediately launched an investigation into the accident.

Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, said no train commuters were hurt.

"We express our sincere condolences to families of the accident victims.  It's a tragedy and we carry them in our prayers as they deal with the trauma of losing loved ones," she said.

In 2010, 10 children died when the minibus taxi they were travelling in was struck by a train at the same level crossing.
