Police in the Western Cape are probing two shooting incidents in Phillipi East in the Nyanga Cluster in Cape Town on Tuesday in which seven people were killed.
Spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says the investigation was handed over to a special group of detectives who deals with violent crime.
In the first incident, a 19-year-old man was killed during a shoot-out between warring parties involving two Toyota Avanza taxis.
Potelwa says when police arrived they started shooting at them.
The members returned fire and killed one of the suspects.
Brigadier Potelwa says in the second incident, also in Phillip East, police were called out to a scene where four men were found shot dead in a house.
A fifth victim died on his way to the hospital.
Potelwa says according to information gathered on the scene, seven armed men stormed into the dwelling and randomly fired shots.
Detectives are also investigating the possibility that the two incidents are linked.
No arrests have been made.
