Service delivery protest almost derail matric exams

The Eastern Cape Education Department says a service delivery protest nearly put the brakes on the matric exams in the Lusikisiki area.

Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, says the protestors had blocked the way for school principals who were going to collect the exam papers from the district office.

He says police were called and they spoke to the protestors who let the school principals through.

On Monday, police also had to intervene when protesting residents of Ngqamakhwe held a protest on the N-2 to Butterworth, blockaded the N-2, threatening the start of the matric exams in schools in that area.

Mtima says Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, made a special plea to his colleagues in the house to step in if there are problems in their constituenciees.

Meanwhile, Mtima says despite the protests there were no disruptions or delays in the exam schedules in those areas.

He says learners wrote music and accounting this morning, while this afternoon learners wrote indigenous language papers.

Mtima says everything has gone off smoothly since the 2013 matric exams got underway on Monday
