A South African Police officer from De Aar in the Northern Cape has appeared in court for drunk driving.
The 40-year-old Sergeant, Claudius Minnaar was involved in an accident on the 18th of February and was subsequently arrested when footage of the incident went viral on social media.
The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the province Mojalefa Senokoatsane says the officer was found at the scene of the accident behind the wheel of a marked double-cab police bakkie.
He says Minnaar is being charged with drunk driving and infringing the prescribed road traffic laws.
The case was postponed until the 28th of March for an attorney to be appointed.
Earlier this week, SAPS condemned the incident and said an internal investigation against Minnaar has been launched.
