Selebi still in hospital, says Correctional Services

Convicted former police commissioner Jackie Selebi is still sick, but in a stable condition at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, the correctional services department said on Tuesday.

Department spokesman Zacharia Modise said Selebi remained in a critical condition.

Two weeks ago a group calling itself "Friends of Jackie Selebi" lodged an application with the office of the minister of correctional services and the national commissioner of correctional services for his release on medical parole.

Modise said the department would respond to the application within the next seven days.

Selebi was found guilty of corruption in July 2010 for accepting cash from convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti and for giving him benefits that included showing him a British drug investigation report.

At the time, he was president of Interpol.

He was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment. His appeal against the corruption conviction was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Appeal on December 2.

Selebi watched the judgment on television at home and collapsed on hearing the outcome. (Sapa)
