Scores of arrests in Numsa-led strike

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega's office says 53 striking Numsa members were arrested in Gauteng on Tuesday on possible charges of public violence,

This added to the 28 protesters arrested previously in Gauteng and 17 protesters arrested in the Western Cape since the start the metals and engineering sector strike, which moves into its 8th day.

Earlier, Numsa spokesperson Castro Ngobese urged striking members to act in a disciplined manner while on strike.

He has however, not responded to a claim by Solidarity that one of its members was being treated in Livingstone Hospital after being attacked - allegedly by striking Numsa members - in Port Elizabeth.

Employer organisation Seifsa said it had also received reports of intimidation and damage to property from its members.
