South Africa has lost radio legend Kevin Savage to cancer and famed film critic Barry Ronge to illness.

Savage passed away on Saturday at the age of 69 - the day it was revealed that one of South Africa’s best-known film critics Barry Ronge had also died.

Ronge died on Sunday the 3rd of July in the arms of his life partner Albertus van Dyk who he asked to only announce his death a week later.

Ronge was the former arts editor of the Sunday Times and retired in 2014.

Famed South African director and producer Anant Singh paid tribute to Ronge, describing him as a passionate lover of films who set the bar for film critics in the country.

Several media personalities also paid tribute to the radio-legend, Savage.

"RIP Sav. You were one of a kind. Thanks for the advice. Welcome to the great gig in the sky. Respect," said Jacaranda FM's Barney Simon.

"Such a sore heart tonight. We've lost an incredible radio legend. Rest in peace, Kevin Savage. Thank you for the inspiration, for sharing your talent with us, and for being the light in our radio world," said former 'Top Billing' presenter and radio personality, Ursula Chikane.

His son, Mike Savage, posted a photo of a radio desk on social media with the caption, "Love you, dad. See you in Strawberry Fields."
