Police in Gauteng will destroy counterfeit goods worth an estimated R36 million on Thursday.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says these goods were confiscated during a search operation in the Johannesburg CBD.
Members of the SAPS in Gauteng and other law enforcement agencies that include the Traffic Police, City of Johannesburg Emergency Services, ER24, legal representatives and personnel of Brand Managers/Owners took part in the operation.
During the operation, 16 suspects were arrested and charged with possession of and dealing in counterfeit goods.
Peters says eight of the suspects will face an additional charge of being in the country illegally.
The suspects are due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court soon.
