SAPS probing brutal attack on DUT student

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) said it was assisting the SAPS in the probe into a brutal attack which left a student with brain injuries.

DUT commented for the first time on Thursday on the attack on 18-year-old Sandile Ndlovu in a lecture hall at Steve Biko campus in Durban.

The first-year industrial engineering student was stabbed and his skull cracked on Monday night.

TheUniversity said that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Isaac Machi and Dean of students Dr Maditsane Nkonoane and members of the student services department, met with family representatives on Tuesday.

DUT said the violent attack on Ndlovu happened inside a lecture venue on campus and unfortunately, the university did not have security guards stationed inside each lecture hall.

"The student services department remains in daily contact with Mr Ndlovu’s family and the entire university community is praying for Sandile during this challenging time," the university said.

Police are investigating the incident.
