Western Cape police made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of 16-year-old Deveney Nel, whose body was found in a storeroom at Overberg High School earlier this month.
Nel's mother reported her missing last week when she did not show up for her lift club back home.
According to a report in Netwerk24, Nel sustained several stab wounds to her upper body.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says since the discovery of Nel's body the serious violent crimes detectives launched an extensive search and investigation.
She says the breakthrough came on Friday when a 17-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
He is expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrates Court on Monday.
Even after appearing in court the accused may not be named as he is a minor.
