Police in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, say several roads that were closed due to recent, violent housing protests, will remain closed, at least until Monday.
These include the R334 between Uitenhage and Motherwell and the R335 being a section of the Addo Road in Motherwell.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, said the decision to keep the roads closed was taken at a meeting of the Motherwell cluster on Friday afternoon.
“Although area was incident free today, it is still tense. We do not want reopen the roads and create and opportunity for more damages to vehicles. So, it is for the safety of our community,” Beetge said.
Police meanwhile arrested 17 people in the wake of violent community protests against evictions being carried out several areas of Motherwell, Ikamvelihle and Wells Estate.
At least eight cars were torched or stoned over the past week as residents who occupied municipal land illegally were evicted in terms of a court order.
On Thursday, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said that the eviction process had been completed and that work would begin on building RDP homes for beneficiaries who are next in line for housing.
